The needs of florists in the Banda region for almost 50 years

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Plant the seed and it will sprout.

This is exactly what Guadalupe Banda did almost 50 years ago when she opened Banda Nursery and Flower Shop in 1917 Ayers.

What started as a hobby has grown into a family business that delights customers and loved ones.

“This is my area of work,” Banda said. “I love plants and we opened in 1975. We started with flowers because at first we were selling plants, then later I went to a florist and bought a flower arrangement. I took it apart and put it back. I took it apart a few times until I got it right. And that’s how I started with the florist. Sometimes I put a bow here. “

It has been a family affair for many of Banda’s relatives who have worked with her.

“It’s great fun because I love God’s creation first and foremost and I love plants,” said daughter Elizabeth Banda Salazar. me. She stays active, she walks faster than me sometimes. She’s doing really well and as long as she’s happy and healthy, we’re okay with that. “

Banda, who just turned 90, is thankful for her good health.

“I can’t remember the last time I got sick,” she said. “I haven’t missed a single day of work for I don’t know how many years. I can’t imagine doing nothing. Even though I’m 90, I’m not going to sit and watch TV. I will work as much as I can, until the end.

Seller Bryce Aaberg has long been associated with the Banda business.

“Yes, I am one of his salespeople. I started selling to him in 1974, ”Auberg said. “I have known her for a long time. She’s amazing… I never thought she would do this for so long. She loves life, she loves plants, she loves plants. She’s a big collector of all types of plants – orchids and that sort of thing.

His work ethic amazes his daughter.

“Mom, they’re heavy,” she said.

Working as a florist has been a lifetime for Banda.

“It’s fun,” she said. “For me it is very relaxing and fun to work with plants. Everyone should get into these plants. It’s very relaxing and for me it’s therapy.

Her daughter couldn’t be prouder of what her mother has accomplished professionally and as a mother.

“She also raised six children, 21 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren,” said Salazar. “So it’s also an accomplishment. “
