Violette Deter has always been known as a flower lover and designer. After years of experience in arts, crafts and design, she decided to start her own flower shop in Turlock.
Twisted Stem officially opened in January 2017 at 239 N. Broadway. Deter’s daughter, April Colón, works as a store manager and has spoken of her mother’s passion for design.
“She has always been very creative and artistic, and she has a background in floral design. Not only that, but she loves design in general when it comes to interior design, circuit board design and she even designed her house. She’s just very cunning,” Colón said.
This particular store has stood out to members of the community with its wide variety of foreign flowers. According to Colón, the shop offers over 25 different flowers that they can mix and match for a variety of occasions.
“We’re pretty high-end florists,” she said. “Our roses are very popular, especially since we get ours from Ecuador. They are about three times larger than the typical rose. They really cause a stir when we put together, for example, a dozen roses. We use a lot of tropical flowers because we just like to look a little different.
The boutique has provided arrangements of all sizes for events like weddings, proms, birthdays, quinceaneras, and holidays like Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Colón added that the store being located across from Allen’s morgue led to Twisted Stem being popular for funerals.
Colón explained that no project or idea has been too big or unique for the Twisted Stem team, and they do their best to accommodate customers.
“We respond to the customer’s needs and that’s really important to us,” she said. “We don’t necessarily have specific things to do, just that if they have a design they want, we’ll make it happen.”
Customers are encouraged to call or drop by the store to take a look at their selection or get a quote for an arrangement. They can also go online at www.twistedstemflowers.com or contact via email if they have a special request.
“We really want to emphasize that we are there for the customer,” added Colón. “Literally, we get very different requests and it’s a challenge, but it’s always a lot of fun meeting those requests.”
