Friends of the late Veronica Shoemaker spruce up her flower shop

A Fort Myers legend’s flower shop already has a new paint job. Friends of the late Veronica Shoemaker worked hard to fix the flower shop her daughter now owns. This florist is located just off Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Florist Veronica Shoemaker has been thriving since 1975, when Shoemaker itself opened its doors. Now his daughter, Mattie Shoemaker Young, runs the business.

“When they first walk in and they say ‘oh my god, you look like your mom,'” Young said.

Young has worked with her mother for as long as she can remember. And it was she who took over when her mother fell ill.

“She said, ‘I know you have a lot of weight on your shoulders,'” Young said. “I said, ‘Mom, don’t worry. Don’t worry about anything. You’ll be fine.'”

It was more than correct. Mattie says he owes it to the community and those who continue to give back in any way they can.

Vic Hein was a friend of Shoemaker. So this week he wanted to give the shop a nice new free paint job.

“When Mattie called me, I thought it would be a great opportunity to repay Veronica and help the community,” Hein said.

“I said, ‘what do you mean?’ He said, ‘I’ll do it for nothing.’ I said what? Why?’ He said ‘in honor of your mother,’” Young said.

It shows that the seeds Veronica Shoemaker planted are still growing.

Mattie Shoemaker Young told WINK News that the flower shop is painted green because it signifies growth.
