Daytime – Take care of your business: bring smiles, one flower arrangement at a time
McKenna’s Florist, located at 520 Boswell Ave. in Norwich, has been in business since 1942. Formerly owned by Jack McKenna, the store is now run by Michael Rankowitz. and he’s been with the company since 1996.
Although Rankowitz had a history degree from the University of Connecticut, he found that working in retail was becoming his strong suit. He is the supervisor of nine employees who work collectively to build a popular and successful business.
McKenna’s Florist is a company that receives plants and flowers from all over the world. The goods arrive from Israel, Australia, the Netherlands and South America, and each week they offer five different colors of roses.
The orchids sold at the florist are imported from Thailand. Gladioli and dahlias come from Willimantic and callas from Jewett City.
At McKenna, a dozen roses costs $ 80, but the bulk of her income comes from weddings and funerals. Christmas and Mother’s Day are also public holidays which ensure a large part of their activity.
The flower industry Rankowitz calls “sensitive” with which the pandemic has interfered. Florist McKenna closed its doors to the public from March through May out of respect for the coronavirus crisis. Rankowitz and his wife, a nurse, felt compelled to remain closed during this time for the safety of their clients.
Florist McKenna is happy to serve the public again and its hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call (860) 887-2479.
