Alnwick woman trades her corporate career for a fresh start as a florist

Polly Smith, who lives near Alnwick, launched her floristry business, Polly’s Petals, this week.

The 26-year-old previously worked in the planning and development sector after earning a master’s degree in urban planning.

Although she enjoyed the job, corporate life was not fulfilling.

Polly Smith launched Polly’s Petals after quitting her planning career.

Following the closures, which Polly used to sow more seeds to expand her garden, and the popularity of her wreaths last Christmas, Polly decided now was the time to embark on a new chapter.

She will now pursue her dream of turning her love for flowers and her natural inclination for gardening into a business.

Polly has focused on using seasonal, sustainable and British flowers and foliage wherever possible.

To learn more about sustainable floristry, Polly attended classes at Tallulah Rose Flower School where she focuses on working with the seasons to showcase the best of British flowers.

Speaking about embarking on this new career path, Polly said: “I’m really looking forward to making flowers and floristry my full-time career.

“I have always been interested in flowers and have always designed beautiful displays with them.

“I aim to focus on UK flowers to showcase the incredible range of flowers we have available in this country.”

In her spare time, Polly has already held wreath-making classes around Christmas and makes fall and Christmas wreaths herself to sell.

She also made floral arrangements for special occasions like weddings and parties.

She now wants to do this full time and where possible will source all of her materials locally – many of which come from her own garden!

Polly is now taking orders for Christmas wreaths and will be taking orders for weddings, bereavements and any other occasion you would like flowers for in the New Year.
